2022 YEAR IN REVIEW

2022 was a great year, and it is mind-blowing to think we are now in 2023! Over the past few years in business there have been many changes – not only within Julia Nance Portraits, but changes across the headshot and personal branding trends as a whole.

I’ll cover the 2023 branding trends to look out for soon, but first, here is a recap of my favourite 2022 moments to inspire you for the year ahead!

My Ringwood East Portrait Studio

In January of 2022 I signed my first commercial lease to move the home of Julia Nance Portraits to a bigger studio.

Located in Ringwood East, the new space needed a bit of work inside to create an interior that had the relaxing and homely vibe I was after.

What I love about this location is the gorgeous greenery right opposite. It means I haven’t needed to sacrifice outdoor headshots and portraits that is so important to me and my work.

When we’re capturing outside, you’d never guess we were in the suburbs of Melbourne. Getting to the studio is easier too. It’s close to Ringwood East train station, busses, Eastlink and the Eastern Freeway.

Photographing Too Peas In A Podcast for a billboard

Not long after I had settled into my new location, I was contacted my podcast company Acast in regards to a portrait shoot for two wonderful podcasters.

Mandy Hose and Kate Mulholland are the two voices behind the podcast Too Peas In A Podcast. Their podcast is focused on parenting children with disabilities.

It was wonderful to view the final portrait on Bourke Street in Melbourne. The billboard also showcased around Sydney too.

Personal Branding Photography

2022 gave me opportunities to meet so many wonderful people, and to create branding portfolios to portray them at their very best.

My branding sessions in 2022 included people who branched out into their own businesses after being experts in their fields for years.

In the mix were authors, tech professionals, mortgage brokers, fashion designers, PHD students and more.

Check out some of my favourite branding portraits.

The Small Biz Expo

May 2023 had me experience the Small Biz Expo for the first time. L&T Events commissioned me to be a part of their experience-based booth for Commonwealth Bank. Luckily for me, I had a great team including Linda and Jonathan assisting me throughout.

We had two studios running, capturing headshots for event attendees. This was a fantastic opportunity for people to get a free LinkedIn Headshot update!

Throughout the two days we were there, Linda and I photographed over 170 people!

Holmes List Barrister Headshots

A week spent in Lonsdale street to photograph the barristers from Holmes List was such a joy.

These people are at the top of their field, are passionate about helping others, and consistently navigate busy schedules.

I love being on-site capturing teams and groups. Every person is different, and it’s nice capturing different personalities.

My Favourite LinkedIn Headshots

LinkedIn is a common reason people want a headshot update. With SO much online, especially post-covid, we look for ways to make ourselves recognisable, and ways to stand out.

Headshots don’t need to be complicated, but a good headshot will portray your personality. You should look like yourself on your best day.

For some people it’s a little quirky, some people it’s serious. There’s no single box to put yourself in for a LinkedIn headshot.

Actor Headshots

Actor headshots are a little bit different to LinkedIn headshots. Actors need to look like themselves, but they need to also look like they can fit a variety of roles.

When photographing actors, I always open a dialogue about how we can capture their various types. We look at the roles they are likely to be cast for, and use expression, outfit, lighting and colour tones to convey the same person for different roles.

It’s a lot of fun!
