Julia Nance Portraits Studio: Ringwood East, Melbourne

The New Home For Julia Nance Portraits

In one of the biggest changes to Julia Nance Portraits I’ve had, I’ve signed a commercial lease! What does this mean? It means that my studio will now be bigger and better, more central, and give a few more opportunities.

I’m so excited for this next stage, and can’t wait to share more about it!

Where am I now?

The studio is located in Ringwood East, which is in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs in the state of VIC, Australia (this may seem obvious to Aussies, but I do get people reading from all over the world!).

What’s great about this location is the ease of getting here. While I might not be right in the city centre, being in the suburbs means easy and free parking, access to public transport, and some gorgeous, lush green areas to photograph in nearby.

The Interior

This space started as an empty, old hairdressing salon. There were holes in the floor, exposed pipes, the paintwork needed refreshing and there was a huge niche that I wanted to remove.

It was a bit of a process getting the space setup, but in the end I created an interior that feels relaxing and homely (well, this is what my clients tell me!).

For the flooring, I went with a light timber look, one that felt open and airy, and would look good in photographs too.

With my wall colours, neutral is best for photography studios. My main shooting wall is a light grey – this is where I take a lot of headshots, and the grey allows me to change the background tone from light to dark by changing my lighting. The rest of my walls are a warmer white.

I created a change space that would feel comfortable and luxe. The original black flooring stayed in this area, and I painted the walls a dark charcoal, with gold and brass features (such as hooks and mirrors), and a rich blue velvet curtain and ottoman.

Ringwood East has lots of nature to offer.

Directly opposite my studio is a tree reserve, filled with native trees, shrubs and grasses all planted over 20 years ago.

This is absolutely perfect for my headshot and portrait work. I can capture images outdoors that are relaxed and earthy, with gorgeous backdrops.

All of these images were taken outdoors nearby. It is amazing to be able to offer such diverse options to clients. I have even photographed families and couples here too (check out my family portrait website here)!

What I photograph here:

As a portrait photographer, I capture a mix of headshots and personal branding. This means I work with everyone from job-seekers to CEOs, authors, surgeons, engineers, business owners, yoga teachers, musicians and actors.

I also photograph families and couples – although we often go to different locations for these shoots as well. Inside is a projector screen that I use for families to view and design their final images – we create beautiful artwork (like all the artwork you can see on my studio walls!).
