Headshot Backgrounds: The Dos & Don’ts
Headshot Backgrounds: The Dos & Don'ts
Headshot Backgrounds: The Dos & Don’ts
Are you looking for a new headshot, but not quite sure how it would look?
Most people worry about what they will wear, or how to do their hair and makeup. What is commonly missed is the thought behind the other visual elements in their headshot photoshoot – the lighting and the background.
“But isn’t this the photographer’s job?“. Yes – of course. A good headshot photographer should be able to guide these choices to compliment their subject. But it also helps if you have ideas and preferences. After all, you know yourself best and your opinion counts.
It’s a collaborative effort between the subject and the photographer (it should be, in my opinion).
Types Of Headshot Backgrounds:
There are three types of backgrounds I will discuss.
Studio, Outdoors and Environmental.
Studio Backgrounds:
For this article, I’m going to refer to all plain backgrounds as studio backgrounds (even if they aren’t taken in a professional photography studio). A studio background is a simple block colour or varying tone. The benefit of a studio headshot background is it allows for the focus to stay on you, their colour can be controlled, and they look professional.
Outdoor Backgrounds:
Many people enjoy outdoor backgrounds for a relaxed feel. Your photographer will use lens choice and camera settings to determine how the background will look (ie: how blurred it is), and this can be an effective way to keep your headshot looking professional and keeping the focus on you.
Environmental Backgrounds:
You might not know what an environmental background is in headshot photography. When I refer to an environmental background, we are using a location (could be a home, cafe, office, workplace etc) to tell more of the story or create a sense of environment in your portrait. With the right lighting and styling choices, this option can look just as professional as any studio setup.
How To Choose:
Choose what is best for you by considering:
1- Your budget (does the photographer offer all these options, and is there a price difference?).
2- Your industry (what ties into your field?).
3 – Your Visual Preferences (what style appeals to you?).
How To Make Sure Your Headshot Background Is Great (the “Do’s”):
- Ensure you’re standing out, and not blending in. Your background should compliment you, and keep you as the focus of the headshot.
- Use tones and colours that work well for your complexion, your outfit, eye colour, and hair colour.
- Keep the background industry-appropriate and allow it to link back to what you do. If you’re outdoorsy then a studio headshot might not fit.
Avoid These Things (the “don’ts”):
- Make sure your background doesn’t distract from you. Keep it clean and not too busy.
- Avoid shadowing on your background (if you’re using a plain studio style) – a professional photographer will ensure this.
- Use a background that is completely irrelevant to you or your industry.
Remember that your entire headshot should be filled with elements that complement you and the image overall. Choose colours that work together, make sure you’re the focus and ensure that the communication of every element brings out your best.
