Private Practice: Photographs to support your skillset

Private Practice: Photographs To support your skillset

As a professional photographer, I’ve photographed several medical practitioners and specialists, creating personalised imagery to support their private practice.

With private practice, for many, it includes a dedicated website. A place to channel referrals, show your skills and services, and introduce yourself

So let me go over some ideas for what portraits you should capture, to support your skillset.

"Medical & Healthcare Portraits"

The hero Headshot:

Your headshot is your first introduction. Use your headshot across all of your personal profiles: LinkedIn and social media, email signatures, hospital and clinic websites, and within your “About” page.

Your headshot should be a solid introduction, so make sure it’s not too far away. If necessary, crop in for that hero shot to truly introduce yourself.

You can choose for your headshot to be simple on a plain background, have more context of your professional workplace environment, or opt for an outdoor setting for a relaxed feel.

Wider Portraits, looking to camera

Many of the medical professionals I have worked with have opted to have wider portraits, either full length or 3/4 crops. This is another way to introduce yourself, and works well for supporting website imagery, promotional marketing materials and social media.

Keep it simple with a plain background, or showcase your place of work. I’ve been to hospitals, clinics and consulting suites to capture portraiture within a contextual setting. Including equipment and setting further supports your experience and trustworthiness.

In action photographs:

Whether you need imagery within theatre, or some more candid shots within a consulting environment. Portraits that show you at work highlight your experience and expertise.

These are best done on-location, ideally within one of your hospitals or clinics. You’ll need to make sure you set up the shoot with all the right permissions. Having rooms available to us, and ensuring clearance for a photographer and equipment, is the most important thing. Planning in advance is key – don’t rush a shoot like this, as we want to make sure we can get all the shots needed.

Shots to consider:

  • You in an operating theatre. I’ve had clients bring in a relative or friend as a stand in patient. I’ve also had other medical staff on-site being willing to be blurred in the background for further context.
  • Interacting with equipment, such as holding specialised tools, working with robotic machinery, adjusting overhead lights etc.
  • Close up details of you at work: it could be just your hands, or a crop of your face while working.
  • One on one with a patient – if you don’t have permission from an actual patient, get a friend or family member to come in for a few shots.
