On-Site Photoshoots: Equipment & How it works

On-Site Photoshoots: Equipment & How it works

You need a photoshoot on-location. Perhaps you have a team of people, and it’s easiest to have it done at your workplace. Or maybe it is the location that is key to the photoshoot – setting makes a huge impact after all.

Does being on-location limit you, if you don’t have naturally great light at your space? Definitely not.

My name is Julia, I’m a professional headshot, portrait and commercial photographer from Melbourne Australia. I work out of a professional studio space in the Eastern suburbs, but I also have a whole kit of gear that I take with me into workplaces all over Melbourne.

Here’s a photo of me with some of my kit packed up, ready to go.

Julia stands looking to camera, holding her camera in one hand and rests her other hand on a suitcase holding her equipment. She wears a backpack and has a second light-stand bag at her feet.

What equipment do you bring?

The equipment in my kit varies as it is is specific to the shoot brief.

Sometimes I have a shoot that only requires one light (I generally always bring two). Sometimes I need a constant LED vs a studio strobe. With the lighting, comes modifiers. Umbrellas are more compact than softboxes, and at times I bring both. I need light stands, cameras, lenses, cords and batteries.

I also often travel with a foldable background, but this might not be needed if I’m capturing environmental or editorial portraits.

On top of this, I pride myself in photo reviews. Having my laptop, and when needed, a stand for that is also in the gear haul.

There is always a lot of equipment that I’m carrying, but it does pack up surprisingly compactly, and it’s a little bit impressive that I can usually get it all into a suitcase or onto a trolley. Naviating the CBD can be a challenge, but it’s one I’m used to.

Have bad lighting? That's why you hire a professional photographer

Standing in front of a white wall doesn’t always cut it. As great as phone cameras can be, it’s often a lighting and consistency issue that leaves DIY photography falling flat.

As a professional photographer, I’m capturing imagery with consistent, high-end lighting equipment that can be replicated time and time again. I photograph repeat clients regularly, and give them the consistency needed across their brands time and time again.
