Barrister Headshot Styles: Nailing your Vic Bar Profile

As a barrister, you want to look at the top of your field. Creating a great first impression and connection will start with your professional headshot.

Your headshot will be used across the VicBar website, your List website and other online presence (LinkedIn, Social Media, Doyles Guide, Online Articles, Press Releases and more).

So how can you make sure your headshot is showing you at your best?

We need to make sure all the elements align for you: from the background and lighting, through to our outfit and expression.

The Visual Considerations:

Background:

Opt for simple and professional. Most barristers tend to utilise a plain, studio style background in their professional headshots. You could also consider an environmental background (blurred to keep the focus on you) for something different.

Lighting:

Ensure your face is well illuminated, with sharp detail in your eyes (and a catchlight to keep them looking ‘alive’).

Crop Length:

Head and shoulders is best for a barrister headshot, so we can see and focus on your expression. This will be most visible across various online platforms – especially those that are scaled down significantly.

Expression:

This will depend on your personality and your field of law. You want to be trusted, but taken seriously. Most barristers I have worked with have opted for relaxed smiles, but there are many who stick to serious expressions.

Outfit:

Keep it simple and professional. Block colours rather than patterns, and neutral tones or a splash of colour. Let this aspect reflect your personality too.
