Editorial Lawyer Headshots
Editorial Lawyer Portraits
Not All Lawyer Headshots Need To Be The Same
If you’re a lawyer, there is a high probability that you’ve had your headshot or portrait taken. Most law firms and barrister lists invest in consistent staff headshots for a strong, cohesive image – and this is important. I’ve worked with many firms to create strong imagery to represent their team. A lot of legal clients opt for a traditional head and shoulders ‘headshot’, captured with a consistent background.
When you think of a headshot, you might immediately jump to a plain background, studio-style image. There is nothing wrong with this style of imagery, and in many cases, this might be the best option for the business.

A traditional studio style is popular amongst the legal field. These images are strong, keep the person as the hero, and tie into websites and marketing materials well.
Editorial Portraits - a different style to consider.
Editorial portraits showcase a fresh, grounded style that can do wonders for elevating your professional image. They put the person (you!) into an environment, and which contributes to the overall impact of your personal brand.
The environment is everything for an editorial style portrait. You want a setting that will give a strong impact to your personal brand as a lawyer. It should connect with your brand story. Beyond this, the setting needs to make sense within the wider context of your target audience, branding, and marketing.
For a high-end feel, think large spaces, beautiful natural light, and striking furniture. A high-end environment will elevate your portrait to the next level.
Connecting to your own space
If you have a beautiful office or lobby, don’t shy away from showing it off. Through your portrait, your clients can also become familiar with where you work. Your environment tells your brand story more than you think.
Consider your wider brand too. Are you based in a regional area? Are you in the heart of the city?
A city skyline backdrop is a very common corporate look, however this doesn’t quite work if your practice is in the heart of the Yarra Valley. Consider who your clients are, what your brand message is, and how all of those visuals come together to tell your story.

Many city law firms opt to showcase a city building window view or skyscape behind their lawyers.
Think Outside The Usual
Photography is an investment. Professional headshots are the first way you can connect, make an impression and capture the attention of a client. A poor image can result in a client choosing another lawyer.
If you’re looking for new lawyer headshots for yourself, or for your firm, think deeply on the style, and what will work best for your brand story.
