Your Headshot specialist in Lilydale, VIC.

I’m a specialist headshot photographer.

That means I focus on this niche area of photography. It’s what my folio is all about. It is where my experience in photography lies.

While there are many headshot specialists in the inner suburbs and CBD, my studio is a little further afield in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. Lilydale, to be precise.

Where is Lilydale, you ask?

Lilydale is on the fringe of the Dandenong Ranges. It sits on the cusp of the Varra Valley, and lies about 15-20 minutes beyond the end of the Eastern Freeway.

What is so special about a Specialist Headshot Photographer in Lilydale?

There are many ‘allrounder’ photographers who focus on an entire range of photographic areas. Rather than take this approach, I’ve focused my study and experience in the area of headshot photography.

Being a specialist headshot photographer means I have experience in expression coaching, posing, lighting and composition that makes for great headshot and branding photography. There aren’t many ‘headshot specialists’ out in the suburbs, and I’m really passionate about what I do.

I’ve disciplined myself in the right cues and direction and formulated a session strategy that helps my clients get the most out of their headshot experience.

I believe that people who live in the suburbs shouldn’t feel like they need to go into the city for a high-end experience and result. And while I think many people associate ‘inner’ with quality and ‘outer’ with subpar, that’s just not the case.

So what makes the Julia Nance Portraits studio in Lilydale special?

What I love about being located in Lilydale is the absence of a stressful environment.

There is no traffic, paid parking, or busy rush-hour. It’s quiet and relaxing at my studio, and I can tell you that you won’t find such a view of the Dandenong Ranges in the city centre. And best of all, there’s no need for a long commute on the train just to get your headshots taken.

Outside the studio there are many outdoor options to take beautiful portraits. From dense bushland to open fields. There are textured surfaces, undercover areas and beautiful gardens. These make natural and stunning backdrops. And while we’re exploring the great outdoors, you have the privacy and exclusivity of a personalised experience. No pedestrians or cars will be watching you as we go.

Inside the studio is a perfect spot for headshots and portraits too. I have multiple backdrop options that allow us to create a range of imagery that will help you stand out.

With a modern interior, it’s here that I utilise professional lighting equipment to capture standout headshots that portray you as someone to take seriously. My introduction to studio lighting stemmed from a commercial photography degree from RMIT University. I’ve had years of experience lighting both people and products, studying various techniques and styles.

To paint you a picture, I’ve captured a video of the space.

I can talk and talk about how lovely my space is. Or I can point you to reviews that express lovely experiences. You can look at a couple of pictures here and there.

Or you can watch a video that showcases the space. Because it truly is quite special:

Why go to a dedicated Headshot photographer?

I pride myself to be able to capture many different headshot styles. Beyond simply indoor and outdoor headshots, the Lilydale studio provides so much more. From branding and lifestyle portraits to corporate studio headshots.

I have experience in many different lighting styles and posing, and years of experience working with people. Headshot photography involves all the technical aspects of photography and retouching, as well as skills in direction and expression coaching to capture subtle moments. It’s not just about owning a camera and clicking a button.

With a background in commercial photography, I’ve studied the intricate art of lighting glass bottles, to copper hanging lights, and tiny flowers. These challenging objects to light have taught me an unbelievable amount about studio lighting in general.

It’s the little bits of knowledge, like setting up lighting to reduce reflections on glasses, that makes all the difference in headshot photography. Understanding technical lighting allows me to create mood: from soft to dramatic.

I’ve also learnt the importance of high-end retouching, for realistic and lifelike results that showcase true professionalism. Not just throwing a preset or filter on top of a photograph. Each final image I send out is attended to with care and precision.

Here is an example of some headshot retouching:

Invest in photography, invest in yourself.

Headshot photography is nothing like high school portrait photography. The art of the headshot is to capture professional images of you – showcasing your personality and moving beyond a still frame. It’s not 30 seconds of you sitting in a chair and being asked to smile at the camera. There should be technical precision as well as a high level of engagement with the viewer.

So when I create my headshot packages, it reflects more than the time we spend together. It’s the years of experience that have enabled the results. The equipment and space, retouching and post-production. Not to mention, all the steps taken to personalise your experience.

Invest in your professional image, and in return, invest in yourself and in your career.
